Did Anyone Try to Make Scones?

Perhaps you don't have a sweet tooth so the thought of of fresh scones with cream and jam does nothing for you.

Don't be deterred - why not makes some cheese scones? If you use the recipe from last week just delete the tablespoon of sugar and add about 75g of strong grated cheddar cheese.

Add the cheese after you have created the crumb mixture and before you add the milk. The dough will be slightly heavier than the sweet version.

You could go one step further and  perhaps also chop up an apple into small pieces and add to the mixture (cheese and apple) or some fresh parsley (cheese and parsley).

I often cut these with a very small cutter, about 2cm in diameter so that they are a perfect size to have with a glass of wine instead of crisps or peanuts. They are much easier to make than cheese straws and look rather impressive!

If you make them in advance of a party, freeze them immediately after they have cooled from the oven. When you want to eat them, defrost at room temperature (say 30 minutes) and then warm in the oven on a low heat so they heat right through but do not cook.
